What is Music Therapy?
Music therapy is an evidence-based practice that employs music in a therapeutic environment to reveal strengths and  capacity in a person's journey towards health and wellness (Australian Music Therapy Association, 2020). As a treatment modality, it has been employed with children and adults living with disability since its inception (Alvin, 1965; Nordoff & Robbins, 1971) and is
included in the NDIS category of "Capacity Building - Improved Daily Living". Music therapy is both non-invasive and non-pharmacological, making it a distinctive and meaningful therapeutic tool.

How is it Different to Music Education?

Although music therapists and music educators work with a similar set of resources to accomplish tasks at hand, there
are significant differences between the two professions. The primary differences between music therapy and music education are found within the intended goals. A music educator focuses on music related goals that may not related to music competencies. A music therapist on the other hand focuses on goals that are in conjunction with a person's cognitive, behavioural, physical, emotional, social, or communication skills through musical engagement. Songwriting, musical improvisation, singing, beatboxing, beatmaking, listening to music, music relaxation, playing music instruments, and movement to music are common experiences that I use with clients to help them achieve their goals.
